Yellowbird

Book about a woman's search for her niece

The goal of this project was to make a book about a podcast episode. I chose an episode of This American Life called A Mess to be Reckoned With, produced by Sierra Crane Murdoch. The story is about a woman named Lissa Yellowbird who searches for missing people in her indigenous community in North Dakota. When her niece goes missing, she begins her own difficult investigation into her death.

I used images of birds and North Dakotan landscapes to connect to the main character's identity and the setting of the story. I manipulated these images using warping, pixelization, blur and more to evoke this idea of a missing piece or unclear picture. I bound the book with a french fold which uses color to indicate the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
